About Chris Burdett

I like taking pictures in small towns: doors and windows, brick and wood, the sweep of a road and the rise of a building, the bustle of a shopping center and the leisure of a park. The pictures on this site represent some of the interesting and beautiful things I've seen and photographed in various Georgia towns, including Lawrenceville, Lilburn, Milledgeville, and Douglas.

I'm an avid amateur photographer and an enthusiastic traveler, preferably down the back roads and through the small towns of America, with frequent stops at anyplace that looks interesting. In this Web site I combine my interests by paying tribute to America's small towns.

I am a self-taught photographer, and find inspiration in the work of Paul Strand, David Plowden, Eugene Atget, and Walker Evans. I am also very interested in travel literature and tourism and roadside history, and admire the work of John Margolies and Chester H. Liebs's great book Main Street to Miracle Mile: American Roadside Architecture.

I'm a Georgia native, and have lived in Gwinnett County for most of the last thirty years, ever since my family moved to Lilburn when I was five; currently I live in Lawrenceville. I have a B.A. in English from Georgia State University and will soon finish my M.A. in Professional Writing at Kennesaw State University. For the last twelve years I've made my living writing and editing computer training material, but I also write fiction (I've published fifteen short stories in various places), take photographs, and go on as many road trips as I can. I am married, and my wife Anna and I have six cats.
